Emotional intelligence
Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to identify and manage your
own emotions and the emotions of others. It is generally said to include three
skills: emotional awareness; the ability to harness emotions and apply them to
tasks like thinking and problem solving; and the ability to manage emotions,
which includes regulating your own emotions and cheering up or calming down
other people.
Here are six simple ideas on how to be
emotionally intelligent
Willingness: Willingness creates an open and honest
mindset and opens us to new ideas and solutions
Quiet time/reflection: Give yourself the gift of five minutes in the morning and
evening and that can give you back control of your entire day
Service focused: Service and EI quickly change our focus.
When we are emotionally connected to the success of others, they relax and work
to their actual capacity
Compassion and cooperation: Cooperation allows us to see the needs
of others and value them as being as important as our own needs.
Gratitude: For all things, all times. A focus on
gratitude frees us from the bondage of negative emotions, which block the
positive effects of the first four concepts.
Action: Without action, all change is simply an
intellectual process. Only action facilitates change. We won’t fix everything
right away, but if we take small steps every day, we will see dramatic results
before we know it.
